Flights from Rome

This beautiful ancient city and capital of Italy is located in the Lazio region and home to Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport. The airport ranks as the 8th busiest airport in Europe and one of the busiest international airports throughout the world. It also served over 40 million passengers in 2016.

Fiumicino Airport is the main operating centre for Italian flag carrier Alitalia as well as being a hub for Spanish low-cost airline Vueling. Other major European airlines fly to and from here as well. From its 4 terminals the airport operates domestic and international flights, including flights from Rome to Santorini.

Directions to Rome airport

Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport is easily accessible via car, bus or train. The Roma Termini railway station serves as a major transport nucleus from which both buses and trains can facilitate lifts to the airport. Even though there are plenty of ticketing desks, it's best to get there early to ensure you get to your flight on time.

The most efficient way of getting to the airport is via the non-stop Leonardo Express Airport train. This train provides a fast and frequent service, however it does costs a bit more. Buses are cheaper, but choose wisely as not all provide direct non-stop service to the airport. Terravision Airport buses are quite popular amongst travellers.

Reaching Thira - Santorini

Santorini has several interesting towns and villages–just take your pick! Among these, four stand out for their prime location and are perched atop cliffs of crescent-shaped caldera. The main town Fira is where buses from the airport arrive and depart to other parts of the island. La is a charming, popular and gorgeous town from where you get the best views of the most unforgettable sunsets you'll ever see. The food and wine here is also highly recommended.

The seaside village Kamari offers a black pebble beach, bars, taverns and clubs in addition to spectacular sunrises. While not very developed for tourists, Akrotiri has one of the best-preserved prehistoric settlements in Greece.

Getting to the city center

Flights from Rome to Santorini land in Santorini (Thira) National Airport. The sole public transportation available on the island is the local bus system. These run from the airport to the capital Fira's main bus station. Note that none of these buses travel across the island. If your destination is anywhere other than Fira you'll need to change buses at the station. In addition, buses do not run frequently from the airport. Check the bus schedule outside of the airport to be sure. At the arrivals terminal you can book a private or shared transfer. These can be arranged online before your arrival as well.
